The European Union and Portugal co-hosted a side event during the 61st session of the Commission on Narcotic drugs in Vienna, titled “European trans-regional responses to drug trafficking and organised crime”. The side event showcased the EU’s efforts in promoting a comprehensive, rights- and evidence-based capacity building model with partner countries in addressing the drugs problem. The Cocaine Route Programme (CRP) was part of the side event which included presentations on its ongoing components – namely AIRCOP, CRIMJUST, CORMS and SEACOP.
On Thursday 22 February, UNODC and the Government of Bolivia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for implementing AIRCOP in the country, reiterating their commitment to combat transnational organized crime at international airports. Bolivia is the tenth country in Latin America and the Caribbean to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with UNODC for implementing AIRCOP.

As part of AIRCOP, operation COCAIR VI led by the WCO took place from 9 to 17 December 2017, bringing together law enforcement services at airports in over thirty countries in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Middle East. The main objective of the operation was to intercept any illicit substance or contraband transported by air, with a focus on cocaine, from South America to Europe, directly or via transit zones in Africa.
