The project seeked to enhance the capacity for international cooperation of law enforcement, judicial and prosecuting authorities of the partner countries in tackling transnational organized crime networks. It therefore aimed to improve law enforcement agencies and prosecutors’ capability to carry out complex investigations and strengthen information and intelligence exchange at regional and trans-regional levels.
This was also done by supporting the consolidation of the AMERIPOL organisation (Comunidad de Policías de América) by providing training and equipment to dedicated AMERIPOL Units in the project countries. This included the provision of a specially developed, pilot system, Sistema de Información Policial de AMERIPOL (SIPA), to allow for secure communication and exchange of information.
The project which ended in December 2015, was implemented by a Consortium of EU Member States led by FIIAPP (Fundación Internacional y para Iberoamérica de Administración y Políticas Públicas).
Today, this project continues in the framework of the the project EL PAcCTO: Support to AMERIPOL.
