21/09 Nearly three tonnes of heroin with a street value of $2.7bn (£2bn) from Afghanistan have been seized from a western Indian port in a major bust, officials said. Two Indians were arrested after the heroin, which was kept in two containers marked as carrying talc, was found by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) at Mundra Port in the western state of Gujarat, the government agency said.

In total, combating illegal drugs costs the police some €1.1bn to €1.6bn a year while court cases and prisons add almost a billion more to the total bill. The suspect travelled from Zambia via Addis Ababa to Mumbai was arrested after a search of her baggage resulted in recovery of 3.6kg of heroin concealed in pouches. Officials suspect that the heroin smuggled in these cases is meant for European countries using India as a transit route.
26/09 A 3,000 kg heroin catch last week at Gujarat’s Mundra port and other recent big seizures have raised questions on the flow of narcotics and their availability in India.
