- A report from the International Drug Policy Consortium (IDPC) critically analysed the UNODC 10-years plan to tackle drug trafficking and highlighted the human cost of the international war on drugs. According to the IDPC, despite UN efforts, drug-related deaths have increased 145% in the last decade.
- The US Department of Justice revealed a list of targets from the Mexican Cartel de Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) among whom reportedly only three are now in US custody. The rest are still to be extradited from Mexican jails – a process that has been ongoing for years.
- Ibrahim and Baktash Akasha have pleaded guilty of importing drugs into the US during their trial. The brothers who are members of the criminal organisation led by the Akasha family were arrested in Kenya in 2014 and extradited to the US in 2017.
- Jair Bolsonaro won the Brazilian Presidential election with 55% of the votes. Bolsonaro is a fearless critic of the left, claiming it allowed violence to go out of control in the country during the successive mandates of the Popular Party. Amid increasing security concerns his promises include the fighting against organised crime.
