On September 22, 2018 the Barbados Coast Guard (BCG) together with HM Customs Enforcement, the Royal Barbados Police Force (RBPF) Drug Squad and the Police Canine Unit successfully conducted an operation which resulted in a seizure of 148.8 kgs of cannabis. SEACOP trained officers from both the Joint Maritime Control Unit (JMCU) and the Maritime Intelligence Unit (MIU) participated in the operation.
SEACOP activity in the country commenced with initial training for the MIU and JMCU delivered in October 2015 and April 2016 respectively, followed by the signature of a Memorandum of Understanding in December 2017. The recent operation of the SEACOP teams in the country marks a great success for the project in Barbados and the Caribbean.
Cannabis packages loaded in polythene bags next to milk booster
The packages containing cannabis were found in a shipping container travelling from Jamaica and assigned to Atlantic Marketing Ltd, a Barbadian company. The drugs were hidden among animal feed as pellets for horses and milk boosters. The cannabis was packed in 267 packages, distributed in 12 large polythene bags.
Investigation is ongoing, and as a result, information on the seizure’s outcomes are pending.
