The SEACOP team continues its outreach meetings in the Caribbean, with a visit to Barbados last Friday 27 November 2021.
Led by Team Leader Dominique Bucas and Regional Coordinator for the Caribbean Karen Clarke, the SEACOP delegation met with Commodore E.R. Shurland, head of Barbados Defense force, Graham Archer from the Regional Security System and Captain Michael Jones, director of CARICOM, in the presence of the Ambassador of the EU Delegation to Barbados Malgorzata Wasilewska .
“Barbados is a very strategic partner country of SEACOP. The country hosts the headquarters of the Regional Security System (RSS) and the Caribbean Community, two major entities in the region,” stated Dominique Bucas.
“It is therefore very important for SEACOP to meet with representatives from these organisations to establish the way ahead with regards to the use of regional training facilities for the Joint Maritime Control Units (JMCU) and Maritime Intelligence Units (MIU), as well as the support of the RSS in the vetting of trainers,” he added.

The SEACOP team also met with Commander Brathwaite, head of the Barbados Coastguards and his JMCU and MIU representatives to assess the need for training and equipment in the coming months.
Barbados received MIU and JMCU training for Coastguard Police and Customs staff back in 2015. The country also facilitated training courses for other Caribbean countries at their leading training facility at HMBS Pelican.
