From 4 to 6 June 2024, CRIMJUST conducted an investigative case forum in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This forum brought together investigators from Brazil, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, and Spain, along with experts from INTERPOL, aiming to enhance regional and inter-regional cooperation in combating drug trafficking. The event was strategically partnered with the International Police Cooperation Centre (CCPI) of the Brazilian Federal Police, highlighting the significance of international collaboration in tackling transnational crime.
During the forum, investigators from Brazil, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, and Spain shared information on ongoing investigations in their respective jurisdictions. The discussions underscored the need for increased international coordination and the importance of trust-building among the participating countries. To ensure a continuous flow of information, the group relies on CCPI liaison officers, fostering a seamless exchange of critical investigative data.
The sessions focused on promoting dialogue between the respective authorities, recapitulating relevant events in police operations, sharing information on ongoing investigations, and defining steps to consolidate a common approach to identified modus operandi. This structured dialogue allowed for a comprehensive understanding of each country’s challenges and strategies, paving the way for a unified effort in disrupting drug trafficking networks.
The CCPI emphasised the crucial support from CRIMJUST and expressed eagerness to continue working closely together, highlighting the importance of jointly implementing cooperation and capacity-building events. CRIMJUST reiterated its commitment to providing technical assistance to the CCPI, with the goal of promoting effective transnational investigations and dismantling criminal networks.
The investigative case forum highlighted the importance of international coordination and collective effort needed to effectively disrupt criminal organisations. The partnership between GIFP, CRIMJUST, and CCPI serves as a model of international cooperation, demonstrating the significant impact of joint efforts in combating organised crime.
