On November 30, the Public Security Minister of Guyana and the Head of the European Delegation to Guyana signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the implementation of SEACOP in the country. Within the framework of the agreement two units – the Joint Maritime Control Unit (JMCU) and the Maritime Intelligence Unit (MIU) – will become operational in 2017.
The Public Security Minister of Guyana welcomed the launch of SEACOP which aims to improve law enforcement capacities to fight maritime drug trafficking by providing training and equipment.
With this MoU Guyana, considered an important transshipment point for cocaine leaving South America, joined other 26 countries in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean in the fight against drug trafficking towards Europe.
