29/07/2020 – The Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs stated during a press briefing that Africa has become a hub for organised crime and a source of illicit drugs, mentioning the involvement of Nigerian organisation in the manufacture of methamphetamines.
30/07/2020 -A fleet of 206 Chinese fishing boats is currently stationed in international waters next to the Galapagos Islands, a UNESCO world heritage site in the Ecuadorian waters. Experts and diplomats are concerned about the threats to sharks, manta rays and other vulnerable species.
30/07/2020 – Wanted by the US for more than a year, a renowned Kenyan wildlife trafficker has been arrested at Mombasa airport. The trafficker is an alleged member of an organised crime group based in Uganda.
31/07/2020 – 1.2 tonnes of cocaine shipped from Cape Verde was seized near the Canary Islands by Spanish authorities. The cocaine was discovered on a pleasure boat registered against the name “Nergha”. The seizure followed an 8 months investigation known as operation ‘Bateas’.
01/08/2020 – A small plane carrying 500kgs of cocaine crashed in Papua New Guinea. The plane, thought to be destined for Australia may have crashed due the weight of the illicit shipment.
01/08/2020 – Costa Rican Authorities collaborating with a US plane and surface vessel spotted a suspect vessel some 50kms off of the Costa Rican coastline. The operation that followed saw the arrest of two Colombians, one Ecuadorian and two Costa Ricans and saw the seizure of 915kg of cocaine.
