From 10-14 July 2023, CRIMJUST delivered a Training-of-Trainers workshop on ethics and integrity for law enforcement officers of Ghana, The Gambia and Nigeria. In the opening remarks the EU delegation representative, emphasised the important impact of corruption in undermining state institutions, impeding economic growth, and eroding public trust. The UNODC underlined the critical importance of strengthening institutional integrity to effectively disrupt transnational organised crime. Therefore, in addition to core technical capacities in investigations and prosecutions, dedicated expertise and efforts must be focused on bolstering institutional ethics and integrity.
The training was held in collaboration with GIFP actions AIRCOP and SEACOP and was tailored specifically for law enforcement officers from the Joint Airport Interdiction Task Forces (JAITF) and Joint Maritime Control Units (JMCU). The training covered a wide range of topics, including definitions of integrity, ethics, and corruption. It also addressed disciplinary procedures, relevant legislation, and the development of policies and procedures to combat misconduct and corruption. Furthermore, participants examined the importance of human rights in law enforcement through detailed case studies.
The programme placed strong emphasis on equipping participants with effective training techniques and materials to prepare them to replicate the modules an effective way within their units. Through group activities, exercises, role play, and practical lessons, officers were able to apply their knowledge in real-life scenarios. The training culminated in participants applying acquired training methodology and delivery techniques to deliver ethics training, reinforcing their understanding and skills. By equipping officers with the necessary knowledge and tools, this training aimed to contribute to disrupting transnational organised crime and promote a culture of ethics and integrity.
