The European project EU ACT 2 has carried out a preparatory mission in Nairobi (Kenya) from February 27 to March 1 with the aim of identifying needs and demands in the thematic areas covered by the project. The project invited Law enforcement and justice practitioners to meet and discuss the threat posed by synthetics drugs to the region as well as its evolution throughout the years.
During the meetings, key entities such as the East African Police Chiefs Corporation (EAPCCO), the Anti-Drug Unit of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the Public Prosecution Office (PPO), the Kenya Judicial Academy, and the National Agency for Combating Drug Abuse (NACADA) came together to address pressing issues related to drug trafficking and transnational organised crime. Discussions focused on harmonising legal frameworks to strengthen cross-border investigations while fostering gender inclusivity within law enforcement and judicial institutions.
Additionally, EU ACT 2 engaged several regional EU funded initiatives including Anti-Money Laundering and Combating the Financing of Terrorism in Eastern, Southern, and Central Africa (AML-CFT ESCAY), Enhancing Africa’s Response to Transnational Organized Crime (ENACT) and Regional Operational Center in Khartoum (ROCK), in order to identify possible synergies and complementarities for future collaboration.
The culmination of this meeting was enhanced cooperation, capacity-building, and strategic alignment among regional criminal justice actors and EU funded initiatives. As EU ACT 2 progresses, its commitment to confronting transnational crime and bolstering regional resilience remains unwavering, reflecting the collective resolve to uphold the rule of law and promote security in the face of these evolving challenges.
