06/07 315kg of heroin bound for Australia were seized in Thailand. While still of unclear origin, $29 million worth of heroin were seized in the biggest Thai Customs seizure this year. The seizure comes amid concerns that production may surge in neighboring Myanmar, the region’s main supplier of illicit drugs, because of severe instability following the military’s ouster of an elected government in February.
06/07 More than 750 arrests and large amounts of drugs were seized in Germany after the police, with the help of French and Dutch forces, gained access to chat data of encrypted cellphones. 310 weapons, 12,200 rounds of ammunition and 168 million euros of assets were also seized. Data is still to be evaluated to determine whether it is sufficient for indictment.
06/07 Two men jailed in the UK for 30 years after being arrested attempting to smuggle 243kg of cocaine, worth over £19 million, from Belgium.
08/07 Trucker arrested and charged in Canada with smuggling nearly 250 pounds of cocaine, worth around $11 million. The arrest comes less than a month after Toronto Police took down a cross-border drug-smuggling ring between the US and Canada.
09/07 Frontex creates handbook in an effort to tackle firearms trafficking, under the umbrella of the European Multidisciplinary Platform against Criminal Threats (EMPACT) Firearms driven by Spain . The Handbook on Firearms for Border Guards and Customs Officers was created in cooperation with the border guard and customs community, as well as EU and international partners.
11/07 Delhi, India Police busted an international drug cartel, arresting 4 men and recovering 345kg of heroin. Deputy Commissioner said opium comes in from Afghanistan and is then processed in India, producing heroin with both Indians and Afghans participating in the process. Police says they are in contact with their Afghan counterparts to trace the rest of the gang.
