7/07/2020 – Thailand and Laos enforcement authorities are cooperating in the fight against drug trafficking at the northeastern Thai border with Laos that is highly vulnerable to the trafficking of methamphetamines and heroin. The Golden triangle (Myanmar, Lao and Thailand) is associated with high levels of heroin production.
7/07/2020 – Online trade in ivory via social media is widespread in Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand according to a study elaborated by the organisation “TRAFFIC”. The authors call for stricter legislation surrounding the sale of ivory as well as closer cooperation with social medial online platforms to ensure more effective monitoring and enforcement against errant online wildlife traders.
7/07/2020 – The latest US State Department Trafficking in Persons Report (TIP report) has concluded that Burundi and South Sudan are lacking measures to address efficiently human trafficking.
8/07/2020 – “Trafficking in human beings for the removal of organs is one of the least understood and addressed forms of global human trafficking and needs urgent attention from the international community”. This was the message from an international group of experts who convened for a two-day online meeting held on 7-8 July and organised by the Office of the OSCE Special Representative for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings (OSR/CTHB), the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the World Health Organization (WHO).
8/07/2020 – Slovakian customs authorities discovered 1,5 tonnes of methamphetamines in the city of Nitra. The drug allegedly came from Mexico.
8/07/2020 – Guatemalan authorities have arrested two sons of a former president of Panama following an extradition request by the United States where both are implicated with money laundering charges.
10/07/2020 – India’s airports, especially in Chennai and Mumbai, are important hubs for wildlife trafficking. Illicit trafficking is expanding as the number of airports in India is growing. The UNEP representative in India stressed the key role of customs officers in detecting potential cases of wildlife trafficking.
