Several suspects of Montenegrin nationality are currently detained in Aruba. They were arrested following the interception of the vessel “Arresa” in which five tonnes of cocaine was discovered onboard. This seizure was the result of an operation led by the Netherlands and Colombia and involved several months of investigation that included Serbian, British and Montenegrin authorities. The cocaine was destined for Thessaloniki in Greece.
The captain and 10 crew members of the vessel intercepted in Cape Verde last year with 9,5 tonnes of cocaine on board have been sentenced following trial. The captain was sentenced to 12 years in prison and the 10 crew members each received 10 years in prison. All were convicted of being involved in international drug trafficking.
The Mexican Ministry of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs and EUROPOL are currently discussing the deepening of the their cooperation relating to security. Mexico was recently included in the list of priority partners from which Europol intends to establish cooperative relationships.
