SEACOP’s commitment to enhancing maritime security in West Africa continues, with a focused Maritime Intelligence Unit (MIU) mentoring activity carried out in Banjul, The Gambia from 30 September to 4 October 2024.
Building on the MIU basic training held earlier this year, SEACOP aimed to boost the operational capacities of MIU staff to collaboratively profile vessels and provide crucial intelligence to rummaging teams for successful inspections.
11 participants, most of whom had completed the February 2024 basic training, underwent practical exercises focusing on illicit maritime trafficking in The Gambia, regional connections to the Gulf of Guinea, and international syndicates.
In-depth sessions on risk analysis techniques for various vessels (sailing, merchant, fishing, go-fast) and leveraging multiple intelligence sources, including OSINT, were also delivered by the two experienced Maritime Analysis and Operations Centre (Narcotics) – MAOC (N) experts.
SEACOP was pleased to see the mentoring programme receive full support from the national authorities and the EU delegation in The Gambia, with the opening and closing ceremonies attended by the Director General of DLEAG, Mr. Demba Ceesay.
Discussions were also held on SEACOP’s ongoing implementation and its sustainability in the region.
Special thanks to Ms. IMMA Roca cortes, the new EU Head of Delegation, and her team for their continued support
