CRIMJUST joined forces with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to enhance oversight and accountability mechanisms in The Gambia. Held in Banjul 4-6 March 2024, a Training of Trainers (ToT) Workshop focused on fostering institutional integrity, accountability, and incorporating human rights and gender perspectives into the interventions of criminal justice actors combating transnational organised crime along illicit trafficking routes.
The primary objective of the ToT workshop was to bolster institutional integrity and promote human rights standards within accountability mechanisms to combat torture. It specifically aimed to enhance the capacity of participants on the Prevention and Prohibition of Torture Act 2023, the Istanbul Protocol, and the Mandela Rules. The workshop addressed the needs and challenges faced by oversight and accountability mechanisms in fighting torture within the context of transnational drug trafficking in The Gambia.
The training convened 42 participants, including 19 women including investigators from the Drug Law Enforcement Agency (DLEAG), the Gambia Police Forces (GPF), prosecutors from the Ministry of Justice, members of the Gambia Armed Forces, judges, officers from the Gambia Prison Services (GPS), and representatives from human rights and legal bodies, such as the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), the National Agency Against Trafficking in Persons (NAATP), and the Female Lawyers Association (FLAG).
