In a joint operation by the the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) and the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), traffickers coming from Venezuela were stopped in a go-fast boat filled with cocaine and fuel on Friday 29 March 2024.
Carrying more than 1,000 pounds of cocaine and a large quantity of fuel, they were arrested at Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo, an official from CANU said.
“This is another example of inter-agency cooperation as well as officers from that unit were trained by overseas counterparts in the region. A number of the officers are a team that do work in the region and received training through EU-sponsored SEACOP programme,” CANU Director James G Singh told the Demerara Waves Online News.
The officers involved in the seizure have been trained by SEACOP in May 2022 and February 2023 in Barbados. This demonstrates the importance of long-lasting cooperation and capacity building in the field of maritime security.
🎥 SEACOP’s partnership with Guyana was essential in ‘bridging the gap between units from Customs, the military, Coastguards, ensuring multi-agency approach in stemming the flow of narcotics’, explains James Singh in this video interview.
