- The crisis in Guatemala has escalated after President Jimmy Morales, who is under investigation for corruption charges and links to organised crime, attempted to stop the investigation by declaring the head of the International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG) a persona non grata. The request was rejected by Guatemala’s constitutional court.
- Colombian authorities killed Roberto Vargas Gutierrez, one of Colombia’s most-wanted drug fugitives and the alleged no. 2 leader of the Colombian Gulf cartel. The operation took place in the Gulf of Uraba region, in northern Colombia.
- Colombia’s President Juan Manuel Santos will meet with U.S. President Donald Trump at the end of September to discuss the ongoing crisis in Venezuela and to find a rapid solution to endemic cocaine trafficking from Latin America.
- Mexican authorities seized 140 pounds of powder and about 30.000 pills of fentanyl, probably destined to the U.S., their largest haul ever of the substance. The drug was headed to Tijuana, main corridor for drug smuggling into the U.S. territory.
